“How do you do it?” I said.“I have an understanding with a horse.”
“What sort of understanding?”
“A simple and honest one，” he said.
“I wish I had an understanding like that with a horse.”
“You‘re still a small boy. When you get to be thirteen， you’II know how to do it.”
That afternoon my uncle Khosrove came to our house for coffee and cigarettes. He sat in the parlour， sipping and smoking and thinking of“the old country” which he had left as a young man. Then we had another visitor， a lonely farmer， named John Byro. He wasn‘t an Armenian but he could understand our language and speak it quite well. My mother brought him offee and tobacco. He rolled a cigarette， sipped his coffee and then said， with a heavy sigh， “My white horse was stolen last month and I haven’t been able to find it yet. I can‘t understand it.”
This made my uncle Khosrove angry and he roared， “It doesn’t matter. Don‘t bother about it. It’s only a horse that‘s lost. And we， haven’t we lost our homeland? What are you crying over a horse for?”
